Most cars take regular. Others require premium. Your wallet might thank you. Regular gas is rated at 87 octane in most states, while premium gas is often rated higher at 91 or Fuel with a higher octane rating can stand up to higher compression before it detonates.
Essentially, the higher the octane rating, the lower the likelihood that detonation happens at the wrong time. On occasion, this occurrence will likely not harm your vehicle.
However, if it happens frequently it may quicken the decline of your engine's performance. Engines with high compression ratios or turbochargers often require high octane fuel found in premium gas for optimal performance and fuel efficiency.
However, the majority of cars on the road today are optimized to run on regular gas. Source: CarTalk. The recommended octane level will completely depend on the design of the engine. Higher octane fuel burns slower, reducing the chance of pinging or knocking in high-compression engines. However, if you experience loud or heavy knocking using fuel with the recommended octane rating, see your authorized dealer to prevent any further damage to your engine. Still, most cars are designed to run on regular gas.
Anyone who says that premium gas will give you more mileage or power is living in a fantasy land. High-octane gas is basically a protection for high compression engines. You may hear the claim that premium and high-octane gas contains more detergents and therefore can help clean your engine. While premium gas may contain more detergents, regular gasoline has more than enough detergents to keep your engine clean.
If you have a noticeably dirty engine, then use one of the many great engine additives on the market. While there are no really good studies that validate quality claims of different brands of gasoline, there is indeed a difference. The main difference between different brands of gasoline are the contents of the additives. What about 85 octane? Which is the best gas for ur car if a mechanic tell u u get the high percentage for ur car to help clean gas line out.
I thought that octane was gasolines ability to hold oxygen therefore at higher elevations where the air is thinner the gasoline cannot hold as much oxygen resulting in a lower octane rating. Is this correct? When your cars engine with carburetor is tuned for sea level driving, the gasoline octane rating should be determined on the compression ratio of the engines combustion chamber.
The carbureted engine will start to smoke black smoke, too much fuel and start running erratically! Old hot rodders such as myself always carry a case with different sized main jets, and stop before the erratic behavior begins. This is where you better have knowledge of how to disassemble your carb and reassemble it after changing jets.
You want less fuel and more air, then a timing light to retard your distributors spark a few degrees. Simple eh? What does change the octane numbers in your gas is sudden stops, and sloshing around in a tank without baffles or foam blocks to keep the gas from doing the Big Slosh!! I love my car and all of the tips and tricks that are on this site are very informative, thank you.
I have a Ford f 5. I have heard that gas can make a difference in your vehicle.
